Trakia University of Stara Zagora was established in 1995 by a decision of the Bulgarian National Assembly, through the merger of two existing institutions – the Higher Institute of Zootechnics and Veterinary Medicine (HIZVM) and the Higher Institute of Medicine (HIM) in Stara Zagora. The university was named after the ancient region of Thrace, reflecting the deep historical roots of the city and the surrounding area.
