The Technical University of Sofia was founded on 15 October 1945 as part of the State Polytechnic – the first higher technical school in Bulgaria. In 1953, the Polytechnic was divided into four separate technical institutes, and the Technical University of Sofia became an independent institution. It received its present name and full university status on 21 July 1995 by decision of the Bulgarian Parliament.
